Christchurch is the largest city of New Zealand’s Southern Island. They are proud of their English heritage, but I wouldn’t say the city looks or feels very English. Perhaps it’s because of its complete renovation following a series of devastating earthquakes some 10 years ago. Look at the satellite photos. Christchurch is just north of the volcanic Banks Peninsula. It looks menacing even from space. But that wasn’t the end of tragedies that befell this charming city. Wellington is like a huge theme park. Walking its streets feels like being in Disneyland. There’s something magical and inspiring around every corner. After all this is the capital of the country where they filmed the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies. And they won’t let you forget about it from the moment you set foot in Wellington. Some people call Auckland “Sydney's little sister” or “little Sydney” because of the many similarities between the two. Both are quite large, both have harbours and both were established as English colonies. And like all the English colonies there is a lot of “Victoria” stuff. Victoria Mount, Victoria streets, Victoria monuments; colonial times were times of some major brown-nosing. It was almost a race between who dedicates most discoveries to the Queen. This case was also quite interesting compared to the other colonies. The Maoris discovered New Zealand in the 14th century and began to settle in tribal communities. Tribes usually don’t like other tribes all that much, so they started fighting. They fought with the proverbial sticks and stones until the English came around....
